An Exegesis of Luigi Mangione: Part 3 – Social Media Analysis

Summarizing and analyzing Luigi’s online activity

Introduction

In Part 1 of this series I summarized and consolidated all of Luigi’s known social media into a unified timeline and in Part 2 I detailed our relationship and what I thought of him prior to the shooting.

In this part I will summarize and analyze his social media and then assess his interests, life, and personality. To improve readability, I have broken this up into two parts, with the summary and analysis below, and then my assessment in Part 3.5.

Disclaimer before diving in: it has been over a month since I wrote Part 1 so I’ve probably compressed or forgotten a few things. If I get any facts blatantly wrong, please comment with corrections and I will update the article.

Social Media General

Luigi had several social media profiles with significant activity including Reddit, Twitter, Good Reads, LinkedIn, Steam, and Instagram.

And while yes there is over two thousand unique items there, which is overwhelming from a research perspective, it’s actually a very small amount of content in the grand scheme of things. As a comparison, my Twitter alone has ten times that amount of content. While yes I have several years on Luigi and I am obviously extremely online, given that he would also go months without a single update to any of his social media accounts, I think we can reasonably claim that Luigi had below average social media usage for his age.

Goodreads – Read

Luigi logged 65 books read over 7.5 years (May 2017 to Jan 2024) or about 8 books a year.

Insights:

• He averaged about 8 books per year overall.

• His most active years were 2018 and 2019 when he was full time at UPenn, averaging 12 books per year.

• After graduating, his books read slowly declined each year, with his lowest in 2023 at 4, before picking back up slightly in 2024 to 9.¹

Books Read - Categories:

Parsing his books read into categories is extremely hard to do precisely. However, the following should be good enough to allow us to make some reasonable speculations:

Insights:

• This is far more than most people and is particularly impressive given his busy school life. But not what I would personally call a “book worm”. More on this in Part 3.5.

• His single most read category was Sci-Fi & Fantasy, at 26% of his books. Then Self-Improvement at 15%. Then a tie between Biography & Memoir, Health, Other Fiction, and Decision Making & Rationality at about 10% each.

• His most popular author was Orson Scott Card with 5 books read. Followed by JK Rowling, Tim Urban, and Malcolm Gladwell each with 3 read.

Key Absences:

• Healthcare – Besides “Crooked: Outwitting the Back Pain Industry” which he did not like (rated it two stars) he does not appear to have read a single book that is even remotely critical of the healthcare industry.

• Politics or Government – He does not appear to have read a single book about politics or government unless you consider “What’s Our Problem?” by Tim Urban or “Industrial Society and it’s Future” by ol’ uncle Teddy.

• History – The only book he read that could be considered “history”, besides biography books, was Sapiens. Everything else was about the present or future.

• Mental health – The only book he read that could even be argued to be about “mental health” would be Can’t Hurt Me by David Goggins. This suggests he either did not struggle too much with this or at least did not seek to solve it through internet research like he appears to do with most of his other issues.

• Trauma or Family Dysfunction – While he mentions the topic of “generational trauma” to Gurwinder and did add “Adult Children of Emotionally Immature Parents: How to Heal from Distant, Rejecting, or Self-Involved Parents” as “Want to Read” to his Goodreads in May 2023, it does not appear it was an active topic of research for him.

• Spirituality and Religion – A few books on Atheism or by well-known atheists, but nothing about spirituality or religion.

• Arts, Music, Creativity, Poetry – No sign of interest in this.

• Philosophical Classics – A few in Want To Read but none read.

Good Reads – Want to Read

Luigi had 240 books marked as Want to Read.

Parsing his Want to Read books into categories is even harder than his Read books to do well. However, after about an hour with Grok, the following should be good enough to allow us to speculate accurately.

Insights:

• He only read 65 of his 295 total books. Or roughly 22% of them. I have no idea what the average rate is but mine is currently almost double his at 43% percent (271 of 626). Though, I am certain my ratio used to be much worse at his age, where I added everything that seemed even remotely interesting, meanwhile not having as much of a habit of actually reading them. Overall, I think it’s fair to say that Luigi was very liberal with what sounded interesting in theory but very stingy with what he was actually willing to sit down and spend the time to read.

• It’s notable that “Philosophy, Sociology, & Society” was his 1^st biggest category for “want to read” but his 2^nd to last on his actual read. Not sure what to make of this. Does this suggest he wanted to be much more interested in Ideas than he actually was? Or perhaps that he just found they came so natural to him he didn’t feel the need to read much about them? Worth pondering further.

• While he added 10 books on Mental Health to his want to read, he read 0 of them. Per my first bullet point, he was curious about a lot more things than he was willing to take the time to deep dive. So it’s hard to say whether he struggled with it at all, though seems reasonable to assume he at least did not believe it was a big enough problem to take active effort toward solving it. Or, again, at least not through internet research like he appears to do with most of his other issues.

Insights

• He was fairly active during 2022 and 2024. Very low activity in 2021 and a bit in 2023.

• In 2022, 95% of his content was Retweets, only 5% his own words. In 2024 that dropped to 18% for Retweets meanwhile upping his own words to 82%. He posted 19 times more self-written tweets in 2024 than 2022.

• Most of his retweets are from accounts like Wait but Why, Andrew Huberman, Steve Stuart Williams, and other self-improvement related content. And added Jash Dholani to his RT roster in 2023.

• The only accounts he interacted with that could be argued as anything closed to “far right” are me, Paco, Jenny baby, Iamyesyouareno, and clownworld. Personally I would discount the latter two though as they are big accounts likely pushed by the algorithm. And also the former three given that we are all actually Sensitive Young Men only LARPing as extremists. Given that Luigi is not an idiot nor a woman I can’t imagine this wasn’t obvious to him.² And thus his interest in us stemmed from precisely this juxtaposition, rather than because he unironically believed in the ideas expressed in our trolling and shitposts.

Twitter Banner

Luigi’s twitter banner includes a picture of Breloom, a mushroom shaped Pokémon; X-rays of his spinal fusion surgery; and a thirst trap in what I assume is Hawaii.

Let’s walk through each:

Breloom

Breloom is a mushroom kangaroo and a Martial artist. In Pokémon lore, it’s spore can be both dangerous or beneficial, with some regions using it’s seeds for medicinal purposes. It thrives in warm, humid, dense forests and is herbivorous.

Luigi was a big fan of Pokémon, with Pokémon GO being one of his teenage passions likely playing a large role in his desire to pursue software development. He also enjoyed martial arts and did them prior to his back injury. He was a lover of Hawaii which is primarily a warm, humid, and dense forest. He also admired herbivorous diets and was clearly hoping, evident by his deep interest in the cultivated meat sector, for a future where one could enjoy the taste and nutrition of meat without the compromise to animal welfare. Finally, I think we can safely say that Luigi had a deep respect and likely use of psilocybin mushrooms which he believed to be very beneficial.

Thus, my speculation is that he resonated deeply with Breloom, likely seeing it as a representation of him in Pokémon form.

X-Rays of his Surgery

This one might seem obvious, but it’s worth commenting on. We don’t just pick our Twitter banners out of nowhere. We think consciously about them as representations of our beliefs or interests. It is further evident that Luigi sat down and made a conscious effort to combine these three photographs in an image editor, which is even more thought out than uploading a singular image.

Especially if Luigi included Breloom as a representation of him, including his back surgery photo would suggest that he saw this is a defining aspect of his life. However, it’s important to note that all evidence we see on his SM suggests that his surgery cured his back ailments. And thus it is unlikely he included this because he was still severely debilitated or in pain. So why then would he include it?

It seems reasonable to speculate that it’s because going through this was a formative experience on who he was. How exactly this was formative for him, we don’t have much evidence to go on. However based on basic logic and the maybe-credible-maybe-not friend who said that his surgery changed him, I think we can reasonably assume it did have a long term impact on him both intellectually and psychologically to warrant it being front-and-center on his Twitter.

Thirst Trap

Finally, his Thirst Trap.

First, why include it at all? Why not a picture of him with his shirt on? Again, this was a conscious choice he certainly thought about.

Was he trying to attract women? Was he just proud of the body he had built, perhaps one of his proudest achievements? Or maybe he believed that being fit would gain him more clout with men online and increase his ability to influence? Or maybe he included it specifically juxtaposed with his back injury to demonstrate his grit and ability to overcome hardship?

Personally, I think trying to attract women on X is unlikely given that he does not appear to have even attempted to engage with any woman on it. But I could see all of the rest having some influence in the choice.

Second, why this location? He could have taken it in the GYM and probably looked even better under more preferential lighting. But he posted a picture someone else took of him atop a mountain in what is likely Hawaii. Why? Is it simply because posting a GYM selfie would have been too on the nose? Probably a factor. But it seems clear to me it stems from his deeply held conviction on the importance of appreciating and engaging with nature and the natural world.

And so of course a photo of him jacked and shirtless atop a mountain in his favorite tropical jungle would be an excellent choice to represent his values and beliefs, earning its spot in his Twitter Banner.

Twitter Lists

For anyone not familiar, Twitter “Lists” are basically self-curated X feeds. You can create one, add people to it, and then all the posts from those accounts will appear in that feed. I don’t know what the original intent of the feature is, but most people use them as an alternative to the “For you” tab which is curated by an algorithm, or the “Following” tab which just dumps every post from everyone you follow. Basically, they’re for having more personal control over the content you see.

I have never used the feature myself and frankly didn’t even know you could see other’s Lists until someone pointed it out to me a few weeks ago. And given Luigi’s seeming tendency to try new habits or systems and then abandon them, it’s not out of the realm of possibility that he created these and then never even really looked at them.

However, given his known love-hate relationship with social media, the fact that the overwhelming majority of the accounts he replied to or Retweeted were on one of them, and his explicit request to Gurwinder to help him curate his feed, I think there is enough of a chance he did use at least some of these often to be worth our consideration.

“List – Following” List:

His largest at 35 accounts. Contains more or less an amalgamation of those in his other lists. Probably the most worth considering as representative of his feed given that he has interacted via retweet, quote-tweet, or reply with more than half of them.

“Agronomics companies” List:

His second largest at 24 accounts. Full of various companies building sustainable and animal-free protein sources. This is likely the majority of the biggest companies in this space, suggesting Luigi spent a lot of time exploring this domain and curating this one. Though he does not interact with most as far as we can see.

“Tech” List:

His third largest at 11 accounts. While we obviously know he was highly interested in technology, it is curious that he does not have a single interaction (visible to us) with any of these accounts (Roko doesn’t count because Luigi replied to my replies only). Perhaps he was liking them in his own time, but does not appear to have felt any desire to signal boost them.

“AI” List:

10 AI influencers, executives, or researchers. My opinion is the same as for “Tech”.

“Evo psych” List:

8 evolutionary psychology educators, companies, or researchers.

He retweeted Steve Stewart-Williams a lot, but Steve is also on “List - Following”. The only person he interacted with more than zero times who is exclusively on this one is DatePsych. So hard to gauge whether he did or did not use this one.

Also, I find it odd “Aella” is on here, who as far as I know has no interest in evolutionary psychology.

“Random Autists” List:

Includes 6 accounts, one of which is me, of various small internet weirdos who talk about radical ideas.

Naming it “random autists” is an interesting choice. Did he mean it in an endearing or derisive way? “Autists” I can understand as being endearing, especially given the giant brain pepe as the List’s image. However “random” suggests that he perceives us as insignificant and dispensable. And yet he interacted with Jenny Baby 69 twice (one is deleted), Near once, and me several times, which might suggest he looked at this one more frequently than most. How do we explain this?

Well given that we’re the smallest accounts on any of these, we’re probably the only ones he thought might be more of “peers” and thus willing to engage with him. But even this is odd because we are all impolite and naughty right-of-center boys, something Luigi distinctly is not. Or at least does not appear to be. How do we explain this? Maybe he secretly admired this quality and wanted to be more of a stinker and was trying to dip his (unsettlingly long) toes into it³? This is possible. Or perhaps he secretly was one of us all along? This seems unlikely. Could it instead be that he had more than enough exposure to the left of him that he wanted to get some of the other side to help him cultivate a more holistic opinion on things? Probably the most likely of the three.

“Politics” List:

Four accounts, three of which are right wing and one which is a former right winger turned centrist. I again find it peculiar that there is no accounts to the left of him and have the same questions and conclusions as others above. With maybe the additional option that he simply started curating the list and lost interest before getting around to completing it.

“Culture War BS” List:

Includes only one account that appears to be an Andrew Tate fan page, which is again right wing. My questions and answers are the same as for “Politics”.

Also the name is interesting. It suggests he had contempt—or at least wanted to appear as if he had contempt—for this topic. Yet, he still created it. Why? Maybe he felt like he should just keep tabs on it despite not being particularly interested in it?

“Psych” List:

Contains one account that is very into psychedelics.

Again, hard to gauge whether this is from having a low interest in the topic or just abandoned the curation. Though, given his confirmed interest in this, I think makes “got bored and abandoned it” as being an increasingly likely answer for many of the oddities we see.

Also the name is again interesting. I assumed it was short for “psychology” at first. But it is obviously short for “psychedelics”.

Again, I could be reading too much into things, but we are now on the third List with an obtuse name that it’s becoming increasingly hard to write it off. I think it’s worth considering that Luigi either personally wanted to downplay his interest in these things to himself, or he knew they were publicly visible and wanted to downplay his interest in them to others (or a combo of both).

Summary:

Overall, Luigi’s Lists are ambiguous and it’s hard to gauge how much stock to put in them. On one hand, he appears to have spent a lot of time curating a few and the majority of his interactions on the platform are with people on at least one. On the other hand, his naming scheme suggests a conflicted relationship with several, and they do not appear to be representative of the views which are well substantiated by the rest of his social media.

Link Tree

His Link tree has a bunch of emojis which appear to say “computer nerd; martial arts, running, yoga, strength training; book nerd; gorilla mind; mushroom mind; Cow justice; yin yang.

Similar to his Twitter Banner, Luigi had to sit down and make a Link tree and choose what to include. This seems very obviously a tool to signal his interests and values. Also, it’s worth keeping in mind that the first thing we include when creating content is the item most at the forefront of our minds and thus more likely to be more relevant; while things we add as addendums later are likely somewhat less important or less thought through.

Computer Nerd – Makes sense as his first choice. He is a programmer by education and career. His interest in technology is a deep aspect of his interests and personality.

Martial Arts, Running, Yoga, Lifting – Represents his highly active lifestyle.

Book Nerd - Represents his interest in reading.

Gorilla Mind – This one I am unsure. I’m not aware of any common uses of this term besides Mike Cernovich’s book which Luigi does not appear to have had any familiarity or interest with. Based on the options Grok provided, I think the most likely is its use in GYM culture to denote discipline and mental fortitude.

Mushroom Mind – Seems evident to show his interest and likely usage of psychedelics.

Cow Justice – Signals his interest in animal harm reduction and agronomics.

Yin Yang – No idea on this one. I have seen nothing anywhere to suggest that he was Buddhist. He was raised Catholic and has expressed many times his generally positive view toward Christianity meanwhile nowhere anything about Buddhism. It’s possible he was interested in it at the point he made his Linktree, had a more secret interest, or it could just be a representation of his valuing of “balance”, such as his views on technology, being both a super tech bro but also a super nature bro.

Instagram

Account Name:

His account name is “Luigi from Fiji”. Fiji is an archipelago of islands in the south pacific off the eastern coast of Australia. He was born in Towson, Maryland and there is no known evidence that he traveled to, let alone frequented, the Fiji islands. Thus my speculation is that it’s just a play on words because it rhymes with his name and perhaps because even before he went to live in Hawaii he may have always had a love for tropical islands.⁴

Account Bio:

His Instagram bio is a backpack emoji, Island emoji, “no” Emoji, and wifi emoji which I think we can reasonabley assume is saying “I am busy traveling and am not active on the internet”.

Story Analysis:

He has only one story from January 2021 with fourteen sub stories where he walks through one of those ad lib kids worksheets when his 8 year old self predicts what the world will be like in twenty years and then he analyzes how right or wrong young Luigi was. It’s frankly hilarious and you should definitely read through it if you haven’t already.

My key takeaways from it are:

1. Just more evidence on top of the mountain of evidence that Luigi was funny, witty, playful, and didn’t take himself too seriously.

2. That many of the same ideas he was interested in on his GoodReads and X were expressed to his real friends on his personal social media.

3. He did not appear to make a single spelling or grammar error. Maybe I’m just weird for not caring about this stuff, but a random IG story I made, even if I put as much effort as Luigi did into this, I would not care to include perfect punctuation and grammar. Suggests an appreciation for minute details.⁵

Image Post Analysis:

Not much to say on these. Very low activity and mostly just a bunch of photos from various trips or significant events with friends. If nothing else, just further fills in that he had an active social and travel life, was well liked, and had a lot of fun.

Insights:

• Of his 138 Reddit interactions, 41% are about health issues, 16% Pokemon GO, 11% agronomics, and 10% school.

• His Pokemon GO interest is dominant early on but subsides later at which point his health issues and agronomics interest occupy the majority of the remaining interactions.

• We notably do not see him asking other Redditors for advice or input very often, instead the majority of his comments describing his experience with something, explaining how something works, or giving advice to others.

• He is overall very compassionate and polite and clearly putting in fairly significant effort to help and support others, particularly regarding challenges with spondylolisthesis.

• Most notably, we do not see a single iota of resentment toward the health insurance industry. He instead praises modern medicine and his only seeming critique and frustration is over doctors being too cautious and unwilling to offer surgery for those in chronic pain. He repeatedly praises the success of his surgery and strongly encourages others to push for it themselves if less invasive methods are not working.

Steam

Note: I have retroactively added his Steam Games list to Part 1.5 as of March 29^th with much more detail if you’re interested.

• 298 Games Owned

• 191 Games Played

• 25 Games >20 hours playtime

• 75 Games >5 hours playtime

• 91 Games <5 hours playtime

• 2945 total hours of playtime

Insights:

• Luigi had almost 3,000 hours of Steam Game time, a very high number even for a young nerd. As a comparison, I have only 2,222 yet am eight years older than him.

• His most played games were PUBG: BATTLEGROUNDS, Terraria, Rocket League, Civilization VI, and Don’t Starve Together at 404, 255, 213, 172, and 137 hours respectively.

• He has 25 games with greater than 20 hours of play time totaling 2137 hours, another 75 with greater than 5 hours played totaling 678 hours, and another 91 with less than 5 hours played totaling 130 hours. As a single comparison point, I have 21 games with greater than 20 hours of play time totaling 1958 hours, 21 with greater than five hours totaling 219 hours, and then only 29 below 5 hours totaling 45 hours. The key takeaway here being that he has higher numbers than me in every category despite our age difference, and the gap widens considerably as we go down the list.

• Beyond his hours, the most notable thing here is the extreme breadth of games he played, both in title and genre. While he does appear to have mostly preferred 2D puzzle-solvers or platformers by indie developers, there are more than a dozen different genres across his list. As someone who clearly prefers to find one game and play it exclusively until I get over it, and who also plays First Person Shooters also almost exclusively, Luigi is very evidently not like this, preferring to pick up a game, put a few hours into it, then jump to another game, often in a totally different genre, put a few hours into that, then jump back to one of his “main” games, and then do that repeatedly.

Conclusion

That’s all for his social media analysis. In Part 3.5 I will be using this information to assess who Luigi is as a person—his interests, personality, and life trajectory.

While it will be published in a few hours, if you want to make sure you get it straight to your inbox the moment it’s ready, you should…

1. Usually extroverts become more introverted in their twenties. For high openness extroverts, this is usually accompanied by increased reading. Luigi does not appear to follow this trend based on his books alone. However, given the overwhelming evidence pointing toward high extroversion, I think it’s more likely that other factors, such as recovering from his intense school years, dealing with his back issues, and perhaps even getting caught up on the social life he likely had to neglect during his school years is a more likely explanation for this drop.

2. Even very intelligent women often struggle to understand male cultural norms, most notably the aggression, bravado, and mockery that permeate it. Calling each other insults and slurs, and taunting each other to try and get the other to crack (“you get triggered, you lose”) is all very normal, healthy, and ubiquitous male behavior. And every human with testosterone levels above 300 ng/dl instinctually understands this.

3. I’m sorry, the chat foids made me do it.

4. Someone in my Substack chat made the argument that because Luigi was in the Phi Kappa Psi fraternity and the Phi Gamma Delta fraternity which is often referred to as “Fiji” originated from the same school, that this is where it comes from. 5. Totally my personal anecdote with a sample size of only a dozen or two but: this is a very Si thing. Everyone I know with Si is very particular and notices spelling, while everyone with Ni only cares about it when it actually matters. I notice it is especially prominent with those who have Si and Ti. Not sure why or if this scales with a larger sample size but given that Si is “the little details” function, I would be surprised to find it doesn’t.
